Yoga and Ayurveda - How are they related?
My story of learning about ayurveda came through the path of yoga. When it is desribed or defined, Ayurveda is frequently coined as the sister science of yoga. After years of learning and studying both Yoga and Ayurveda, I have come to believe that they are more than sisters, they are much more like conjoined twins.
To live an ayurvedic lifestyle of healthy diet, daily routines and self care requires the practices of the 8 limbs of yoga. The opposite is true as well. Listed here are the 8 limbs of yoga and how Ayurveda is integrated.
Yama (moral restraints) – how we relate to others and the environment, how do we integrate them into our practices for good health and wellness
Niyam (observances) – how we relate to ourselves, our true nature (prakriti or Ayurvedic Constitution)
Asana (posture) - yoga poses and practices can be modified to meet your wellness needs and nature.
Pranayama (moderation of the movements of Prana) - practicing breath bring connection of the mind and body, brings about calm and ease.
Pratyahara (moderation of the sense organs) - we use our sense organs (sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell) to attain what we need to sustain good health and wellness.
Dharana (concentration) - with focus and concentration, we can be mindful with our practices, making the best choices for our health and wellbeing.
Dhyana (meditation) - in states of meditation we can unveil our true self, listen to our inner voice and create states of calm for healing and wellness.
Samadhi (meditative absorption) - the ultimate goal of union with our source.
We will be exploring this integration and fusion of the two sciences during our workshop on February 6th with Bryant Mascarenhas.Learn more here.
