The phrase “playing small” has been buzz-worthy for a while now and continues to show up frequently. “Stop playing small. You deserve more!” or “Don’t let your fears keep you from playing a bigger game!” are frequently heard at conferences or read in motivational pieces.
“Playing small” is the notion that you are capable of more than you are currently delivering to the world, and that you are not letting yourself become the highest and fullest version of yourself. In other words, you’re not playing to your full potential.
I couldn’t agree with this more. Most of us—in fact, almost all of us—are definitely playing small, but popular culture and those who speak of this from their pulpits deliver the message as if playing a bigger game is something that can happen simply by acknowledging that it’s happening and then doing something about it.
Well, kind of. But not really.
Your lower brain’s job is to play small, and to do it with intention. You go through life responding and making decisions, for the most part, from your lower, “lizard” brain. It will keep you playing small because it wants to keep you safe. Playing a bigger game is something your lower brain will shy away from at all costs because it wants you to survive, and survival comes from doing the same things over and over again. Whether or not they actually “work” doesn’t matter. It’s repetitive and the threat of the “new” is not there. Newness might threaten your safety, and you can’t get to bigness without newness. So just realizing you’re not living up to your full potential and deciding you’re going to do so doesn’t really work because it’s not a conscious activity. You need a process and a method to move into living a bigger kind of life and the most important piece of all: you have to engage your Higher Brain to start doing this for you.
So what do you do if you want to play a bigger game? You have to know how to engage the Higher Brain so you can raise your level of consciousness and start responding to life from there.
The reality is, you are perfectly able to stop playing small, to meet and exceed your goals and to become the fullest version of yourself...once you switch from lower brain living to "Higher Brain" living. If you really want to see some amazing things happen, join a community with folks who are already doing this and watch yourself soar to heights you never imagined. That’s the collective consciousness raising everything in its path.
With the explosion of technology and the general pace of life continuing to inundate us with the need to go faster, further, bigger, the question for you is, how big do you want to be? There are significant opportunities like never before to contribute to global change and improvement but you’ll need to get “big on the inside” first.
Fortunately, your brain is ready and willing to do just that—so what are you waiting for?
