91 percent of her patients had this problem

Dear Deborah,

We write a lot about stress in these Higher Brain Living® newsletters. Part of   the reason is that it is the #1 reported struggle for most people. The other reason is that it is one of the easiest elements of your life to manage, today, right now, where you are. There are bodies of solid research, advice from trusted experts,
and reliable, practical tools that every single person can start using this very moment to improve the quality of life and health. In this month's issue, we detail some of the latest research on how to conquer stress in practical, tangible ways. That's hope — and real power!

To the evolution of humanity,
Tally Hayden

As we've said in previous newsletters, stress in and of itself is not bad; in fact, it's a totally necessary part of human survival. Certain structures in the brain — mainly the amygdala and hypothalamus — register a potential threat, and they send signals to the pituitary gland to tell your adrenals to send out cortisol (and its partner, epinephrine) to your cells and prepare you to respond to the perceived threat.

Dr. Sara Gottfried is a Harvard-educated M.D. who has spent the last decade researching and treating patients with hormone imbalances. She's worked with over 22,000 clients, most of them women, to restore hormonal balance and bring back energy, vitality, joy, focus, and whole-life health.

What she's discovered? Stress — and specifically unhealthy production of the stress hormone cortisol — are at the root of pretty much every hormone and health issue we can imagine. "All hormonal problems lead back to cortisol," she says. Of the 22,000 patients she's seen in the last ten years, 91% of them had issues with cortisol imbalance!

Persistent elevated levels of cortisol — which is a common symptom of the constant perceived stress uniquely experienced in the 21st-century Western world
 — result in things like:
  • Blood sugar imbalance
  • Weight gain and obesity
  • Non-restorative sleep or disrupted sleep
  • Feeling "tired but wired"
  • Lack of "feel-good" hormones like serotonin, which can lead to depression
  • Tanked sex drive
  • Immune system suppression
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Cardiovascular disease

But there's good news. Stress is real — but so are the solutions to manage it (and cortisol) in healthy, life-transforming ways.

In sharp contrast to the negative symptoms above, when your cortisol is in what Dr. Gottfried calls the "Goldilocks position" — not too much, not too little, but juuuuust right — you can begin to consistently experience and enjoy:

  • Stress resilience
  • Deep, healing, restorative sleep
  • Adrenal repair every night
  • Consistent energy instead of jolts and crashes at all the wrong times
  • Stable blood sugar
  • Consistent upbeat mood, because serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine are in balance and can effectively "communicate" with each other
  • Better immune function
  • Better digestion
  • Reignited sex drive
  • Regular metabolism and better ability to maintain a healthy weight

Even better news? With practice, we can learn to regulate our perception of stress. We can learn to calm the hormonal fury. And we can learn to maximize our body's ability to return to balance.
