"Remember, it doesn't matter how deep into a posture you go - what does matter is who you are when you get there." ~ Max Strom
Urban Legends from your first Yoga Class
Yoga has official hit the big times because pretty much everyone you talk to knows someone who has a friend or aunt or co-worker who had a totally CRAZY experience at their first Yoga class.
Here are 2 of the Yoga Urban Legends that have crossed my path. Story 1: Although a person is a little apprehensive, they agree to try 1 Yoga class. During this students FIRST SAVASANA a person comes around and pops an acupuncture needle into their 6th Chakra/3rd Eye completely unannounced. Now I am the first person to praise the benefits of acupuncture and actually think a Yoga + Acupuncture Guided Meditation would be incredible, but this practice would freak out most newbies and perhaps scare them off from Yoga forever. Story 2: A person is eager to try Yoga and attends their first class. During the first class, the teacher decides to use Mr. Yoga Newbie as the model for the entire class to watch a demo on. Woops, did I forget to mention that the teacher had Mr. Yoga Newbie take his shirt off?!?
Maybe you have your own Yoga urban legend. While legends can be just stories, they usually start from a morsel of truth. There are a lot of different Yoga practices out there. If they make people feel better in their body, mind, & spirit I celebrate that path. What happened during these classes is not wrong, but perhaps a little intimidating for someone brand spanking new to Yoga.
I believe the basis to a lifelong love of Yoga begins with a solid foundation. A safe & welcoming environment where individuals are taught the basics such as how to be safe in a practice, how to use props such as blocks to individualize a practice to their specific needs, and even learn a few tricks about the benefits of healthy breathing.
