You Were There

My first triathlon,
nervous as all
and you were there.
Telling me you can do this.

I swam a half mile,
farther with each stroke
and you were there.
Breathing through me.

I cycled twelve miles,
in the wind and up hills
and you were there.
You gave me a push.

I ran three-point one,
tired and sore, I kept on
and you were there.
You ran beside me encouraging.

I crossed the finish line,
grinning through tears
and you were there.
You stood proud.
